Tom Freer has served as assistant principal timpani and as a member of the percussion section of The Cleveland Orchestra since 1991.  Before coming to Cleveland, he was principal timpani with the Alabama Symphony (1989-91) and the Fort Wayne Philharmonic (1987-89), and also served as principal percussion/assistant timpani with the Norrköpings Symfoniorkester (1986-87) in Sweden.  Mr. Freer is a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music.  His teachers have included Cloyd Duff (former principal timpanist of The Cleveland Orchestra), Paul Yancich (current principal timpanist of The Cleveland Orchestra), Richard Weiner (former principal percussionist of The Cleveland Orchestra), Jim Atwood, and Mario Gaetano.
